Historical Note

Following a rise in anti-Semitism in Russia and Eastern Europe, the Jewish population in Texas doubled around the turn of the century. Jewish people immigrated to urban and rural areas near Fort Worth, fostering a network of Jewish organizations, social programs, congregations, and companies. Congregation Ahavath Sholom was formed in Fort Worth in 1892 and Congregation Beth El was formed in Corsicana in 1902. In the 1980s, an increased effort to preserve the cultural heritage of Texas Jews began, beginning with the founding of the Texas Jewish Historical Society in 1981. The Fort Worth Jewish community echoed the statewide sentiment and organized the Fort Worth Jewish Community Sesquicentennial Celebration and Tour in 1986.
