A Guide to the Joshua K. Callaway Papers, 1862-1863
Joshua K. Callaway (1834-1863) was born to Reverend Joseph and Temperence Callaway on September 2, 1834 in Alabama. After Callaway’s parents died in 1857, he married Dulcinea Baker. They had three children together, two girls and one boy. After the birth of his son Joseph in early 1862, Joshua joined the 28th Alabama Regiment, Army of Tennessee, Confederate Army as a lieutenant. Callaway participated in Braxton Bragg’s invasion of Kentucky and fought in the battles of Chickamauga, Chattanooga, Lookout Mountain, and Missionary Ridge. Callaway served in the army from April 13, 1862, when he first joined the Confederate forces, until his death during the Battle of Missionary Ridge, Tennessee, November 22-25, 1863.
The Joshua K. Callaway Papers, 1862-1863, contain 84 letters written by Calloway to his wife, Dulcinea Baker Callaway, during his time in the Confederate Army. The letters include accounts of his experiences in Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Georgia, as well as his descriptions of daily life in Confederate camps. Furthermore, the letters contain first-hand accounts of battles such as Chickamauga, Chattanooga, and Lookout Mountain. In addition to Callaway’s letters, the papers contain one letter from his cousin Mary Jane Sophia Callaway, a teacher and charter member of the educational institution that became Mississippi State University for Women, and one letter from Lieutenant W. F. Aycoch advising Mrs. Callaway of the death of her husband at the battle of Missionary Ridge.
