Biographical Note

George Purl Childers (1876-1923) was a first lieutenant with the 143rd Infantry of the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I.

Correspondence, genealogy, memoranda, notes, account papers, legal documents, minutes and resolutions, clippings, and poems, deeds, book list, guidebooks, broadsides, maps, and magazines concerning the career and family of George Purl Childers comprise the George Purl Childers Papers, 1856-1919. The papers relate to World War I, the Women's Christian Temperance union, the Presbyterian Church, and the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. Additionally, the papers concern the White, Peebles, and Bozman families in the nineteenth century. The papers also include Childers's collection of French and German newspapers, pamphlets and posters, a practically complete set of The Stars and Stripes, an army uniform, German coins, medals, and an insignia.
