A Guide to the Math Medley Radio Show Collection,
1998-2004.
"Math Medley" was a radio talk show that
was broadcast from May 1998 to June 2004 from radio station WALE in Providence,
Rhode, Island, or from KFNX in Phoenix, Arizona, and sometimes from both. Each
week the host, Dr. Pat Kenschaft, or a guest host, interviewed a guest about a
topic related to mathematics; the primary issues included education, parenting,
equity, and environmental issues as well as mathematics itself. Among the
guests were presidents of major mathematical organizations such as the National
Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Mathematical Association of America,
American Mathematical Society, and the World Congress of Mathematicians, guests
who were less well known, including teachers of mathematics at all levels, and
people who used mathematics in environmental and financial fields.
The
show began after the publication of Dr. Kenschaft’s book Math Power: How to
Help Your Child Love Math Even If you Don't. "Math Medley" was self-funded with
additional support from advertisers and the AMS.
Patricia Clark
Kenschaft (b. 1940) grew up in Nutley, NJ. After earning an A. B. degree from
Swarthmore College, she taught high school mathematics for a year, after which
she took a summer course in number theory at the University of Pennsylvania
(Penn) with Emil Grosswald, who arranged a teaching fellowship for her at Penn.
Dr. Kenschaft later finished her Ph.D. in C*-algebras at Penn under Edward
Effros. In 1973 she joined the faculty of Montclair State University, from
which she retired in 2005.
