Biographical Note

Born in 1936, Coke H. Dilworth is a fourth-generation Austinite who graduated from the University of Texas School of Architecture. In 1972, he established a business called The Darkroom that offered film processing to photographers who did not have their own. He was also the "default" photographer for the Armadillo World Headquarters from 1972 to 1978. The "AWHQ" music hall was opened in 1970 by Eddie Wilson, manager of the psychedelic rock band Shiva's Headband, on the site of a former National Guard armory in south Austin. The hall held about 1,500 people. The venue became iconic of Austin's unique hippie-bohemian music scene.

Scope and Contents

Approximately 50 contact sheets and negatives document the Austin, Texas, music scene of the mid-1970s. Negatives are primarily 35 mm black and white, although there are some color negatives and a few medium format negatives. Photographs depict performances at Armadillo World Headquarters, as well as the AWHQ staff and some informal events. All contact sheets have corresponding negatives. All performances and events listed are at the AWHQ unless otherwise noted. Items are separated by format and arranged chronologically. Also included is a project that Dilworth did in 1976, photographing the location and audience of Willie Nelson's July 4th picnic in Gonzales, Texas, before, during, and after the event. This consists of 8 contact sheets and 251 35 mm black and white negatives.
