Biographical Note

Historian Joe Bertram Frantz spent his childhood in Weatherford, Texas, before attending Weatherford College and the University of Texas at Austin (B.A., 1938; M.A., 1940). He began his professional career at the San Jacinto Museum before World War II. Frantz served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy and served as communications officer in eight major engagements in the South Pacific. After the war he returned to Texas and studied under legendary University of Texas historian Walter Prescott Webb. After the publication of his doctoral dissertation, Gail Borden, Dairyman to a Nation, Frantz began his career at the University of Texas history department.

Frantz developed a reputation as a skilled speaker and expert on the American West. He became chairman of the history department, as well as president of the Texas State Historical Association and editor of the Association's Southwestern Historical Quarterly.

While at the University of Texas, Frantz wrote 13 books, including The American Cowboy: The Myth and the Reality (1955) and 6,000 Miles of Fence: Life on the XIT Ranch of Texas (1961), with Cordia Sloan Duke. He directed the Lyndon B. Johnson Oral History Project, 1967-1974, producing oral history interviews for the Johnson presidential library. After retiring from the University of Texas, Frantz taught at Corpus Christi State University, now Texas A & M University-Corpus Christi. His final book, Lure of the Land: Texas County Maps and the History of Settlement (1988), won awards from the Texas Historical Commission and the Sons of the Republic of Texas. He died November 13, 1993.

Scope and Contents

Manuscripts, photographs, bibliographies, and maps document the professional career and personal interests of University of Texas historian Joe B. Frantz.

UT Sports and college football: The Frantz Papers record the subject’s participation in sports and cultural activities, particularly at the University of Texas at Austin. Frantz’s collection of football programs, booster club newsletters, sports magazines, and stadium ticket stubs extends from his time at Weatherford College (1938) through the 1980s.

Walter Webb correspondence and materials: The Franz Papers comprise correspondence and printed materials related to the life and career of noted Texas historian Walter P. Webb, including letters between Webb and his wife, Terrell Maverick Webb. Also included are class notes from Webb’s 1934 “History of the Great Plains” course written by D. Barnard Hardeman, who later became a Texas legislator and Democratic Party advisor.

UT Campus Activities programs: Programs and printed materials from University area dance, theater, and music programs.

XIT Ranch and Western History: Research materials from Frantz’s history of the XIT Ranch, 6,000 Miles of Fence, include correspondence with his co-author, Cordia Sloan Duke. Also included are Duke’s manuscripts from articles published in The Cattleman, as well as oral histories Duke collected from XIT ranch workers. The collection includes numerous 19th and early 20th century photographs of ranch life.

Photographs and media: Frantz’s materials include approximately 1 linear foot of photographic materials documenting the American West. His subjects include Native Americans, ranch life, railroad construction, and oil exploration.

Western History Research/Samuel May Williams and Thomas F. McKinney Research: Reading files and manuscripts reflect his studies of Texas and Western history, including materials used in writing The Mercantile House of McKinney & Williams, Underwriters of the Texas Revolution (1952), as well as other book projects and numerous journal articles. Included are Frantz’s notes and transcriptions of primary source documents. Frantz’s collection includes Civil War materials from two Confederate soldiers. The diary of H.C. Medford chronicles his time at Virginia Point, near Galveston. Medford, of Van Zandt County, served with Lane’s Regiment of Texas Cavalry Volunteers. Frantz’s copy of this diary, dated February-March 1864, complements two other Medford diaries owned by the Fort Worth, Texas, municipal library and transcribed in Southwestern Historical Quarterly, vol. 34, nos. 2-3. In addition, correspondence among the Erwin family of Parker County records the service of William Armstrong Erwin, who served with Col. Parson’s Texas Cavalry Brigade from 1862-1865.

Gail Borden Papers and Research: The collection includes research materials and photographs for Frantz's dissertation, Gail Borden, Dairyman to a Nation, and his later book Borden at the Century Mark (1959).

Mexico Congress (UT), Texas State Historical Association, miscellaneous research and correspondence: The collection includes organizational materials for a Mexico Congress meeting, programs and materials from Frantz's tenure as president of the Texas State Historical Association, and more general research and correspondence, including official Holy Roman Empire correspondence from Bad Windsheim, now Germany (1746).
