Abstract |
Dr. Richard Hubert Bruck
received his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Toronto in 1940 and
continued his career as a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison,
serving as advisor to 31 students. These papers include research notes,

Richard Hubert Bruck (1914-1991) received his Ph.D. in mathematics from
the University of Toronto in 1940 and continued his career as a professor at
the University of Wisconsin-Madison, serving as advisor to 31 students. Bruck
was a 1946-1947 Guggenheim Fellow of Mathematics and a 1963 Fulbright Lecturer
in Canberra, Australia. In 1951 Bruck collaborated with H. J. Ryser to prove
the Bruck-Ryser Theorem, now known as the Bruck-Ryser-Chowla Theorem, which is
the only general nonexistence theorem for finite projective planes to date. He
also introduced finite nets in 1951 and in 1956 was awarded the Mathematical
Association of America’s Chauvenet Prize for his article entitled “Recent
Advances in the foundations of Euclidean Plane Geometry,” which had been
published the previous year in
American Mathematical Monthly.

Branch files and research notes make up the bulk of this collection
along with lecture notes, correspondence and publications. Papers in the
collection primarily relate to the Burnside problem and its relatives along
with finite geometries. Of note is the Luxembourg correspondence folder, which
contains Bruck family history, written by Bruck, as well as Bruck’s listing
included in
Who’s Who in America, 1968-1969.
Forms part of the Archives of American Mathematics.
