Biographical Note

Attorney and politician Ernest Othmer Thompson (1892-1966) was born in Alvord, Texas, the son of Lewis Oliver and Flora Lee Agnes (Murray) Thompson. After graduating from the University of Texas Law School in 1917, Thompson served in World War I, and then managed the Amarillo Hotel in Amarillo, Texas. He married May Peterson in 1923 and was elected mayor of Amarillo, Texas, five years later. In 1932, Thompson was appointed to the Texas Railroad Commission, where he served from 1932 to 1965. Also a member and chairman of the Interstate Oil Compact Commission (1935-1965), Thompson ran unsuccessfully for the governorship of Texas in 1938 and 1940.
