Biographical Note

Born in Denver, Colorado, in 1929, Herbert Sheldon "Shel" Hershorn learned photography during his service in the U.S. Navy. Afterwards, he began his photojournalism career with the Tribune Herald in Casper, Wyoming, then moved to Dallas, Texas, in 1954 to work for the Dallas Times Herald and United Press International (UPI). In 1956, he began work as a contract photographer for the Black Star Publishing Company.

Based in Dallas for most of his photojournalism career, Hershorn primarily documented Texas subjects including the state's industry, fashion, sport teams and politics. However, he did photograph several notable assignments outside of the state, including George Wallace's "Stand in the Schoolhouse Door" during the integration of the University of Alabama and other civil rights events in the Deep South. Hershorn's photographs have been published in numerous magazines, including Life, Fortune, Newsweek, Esquire, Sports Illustrated, National Geographic, the Saturday Evening Post, and Playboy.

Hershorn moved to Taos, New Mexico, in 1970 to begin a simpler life, working as a plumber and furniture maker. He died of pneumonia in Espanola, New Mexico, in 2011. The photographer donated his archive to the Briscoe Center in 1996.

Scope and Contents

Comprised of nearly 100,000 images, the Shel Hershorn Photograph Collection provides rich pictorial documentation of life in Texas from the 1950s to 1970s. The Shel Hershorn archive features a remarkable variety of subject matter including Texas oil tycoons, national presidential campaigns, and everyday life in Dallas. Notable assignments featured in the archive include coverage of Sam Rayburn's funeral; Lee Harvey Oswald in the days following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy; and the aftermath of Charles Whitman's shootings on the University of Texas campus, including photographs of the UT Tower viewed through bullet-shattered glass. An iconic frame from the assignment was featured as a Life magazine cover image in 1966.

The archive is comprised of a variety of photographic formats, including color and black and white 35mm negatives, mounted and unmounted photographic prints, positive transparencies (slides), and black and white and color picture boards.
