Papers concern the career of Jones (1874-1956), builder, financier,
statesman, and publisher of the Houston Chronicle,
and relate to the construction of buildings in Houston, Fort Worth,
Dallas, and San Antonio; real estate holdings in Dallas, Houston Memphis, and
New York City; the Democratic National Convention of 1928 in Houston; the
development of the San Jacinto Monument, battleground, and battleship; the
creation of the Houston Endowment, Inc.; Jones's service as director general of
the Department of Military Relief of the American Red Cross and member of the
Red Cross War Council during World War I, as federal loan administrator of the
Reconstruction Finance Corporation and secretary of commerce under Franklin D.
Roosevelt, and as director general of the Texas Centennial Celebration; his
activities as the chairman or the Houston Harbor Board, as a member of St.
Paul's Methodist Church and chairman of its building committee, and in
development, finance, and banking operations, particularly in Houston; and his
collaboration with Edward Angley in writing 50 Million
Dollars. A gap exists in the collection from 1930-1950 representing
Jones's active service in the federal government. Most of the Jones material
for those years is located in the Library of Congress. Collection contains
correspondence, business and financial records, book manuscripts and research
notes, speeches, certificates, address and appointment books, scrapbooks,
magazine and newspaper clippings, annotated copies of the Congressional Record, blueprints, charts, photographs,
films, cartoons, pamphlets, painting, drawings, posters, and phonograph
records. There is some photocopied material.

JONES (JESSE HOLMAN) PHOTOGRAPHS,
ca. 1880-1965 ca. 700 photographs (mostly B & W prints). ca. 150 cartoons and other art works. ca. 75 framed pictorial items. |
|
Scope and Contents |
|
Images of Jones (1874-1956), his family, friends, and business
colleagues document his career as a builder, financier, statesman, and
publisher of the Houston Chronicle. Many
photographs concern the history, architecture, and development of Houston. The
cartoons are originals, mostly political in nature, commenting on Jones's role
in the Roosevelt Administration as administrator of the Reconstruction Finance
Corporation and secretary of commerce. Many of the framed items are inscribed
by the subjects. Items are arranged by format: Photographs, framed items, and
cartoons and art work, and include black and white prints, tintypes, cartoons,
sketches, paintings, and photostats. An item by item description is included in
the inventory. |
