Biographical Note

Harry Koger and his wife, Grace, were labor union organizers of agricultural workers (primarily Black sharecroppers and Mexican migrant workers) in Texas and the South. Harry Koger joined the Food, Tobacco, Agricultural and Allied Workers Union of America in 1938 where he served in various capacities including regional director for Texas and Oklahoma. Harry was born in 1893, his wife in 1903. Harry Koger died in 1979, his wife in 1983.

Scope and Contents

Papers contain biographical data, correspondence, newsletters, reports, articles, speeches, and book of poems. Included are scattered issues of the United Neighbors Newsletter, the Farm Workers Newsletter, and the Migrant Workers Newsletter written by Koger; reports of the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee, as well as the Agricultural Workers Bulletin, and of the Food, Tobacco, Agricultural and Allied Workers Union activities in the areas of racial discrimination, migratory workers, and other minority labor groups in Texas in the 1940s and 1950s. There are miscellaneous studies by various groups on the hardships of the agricultural worker. Also included are speeches and articles by Koger describing his family's organizing experiences, from the 1940s through the 1960s. Emphasis is on East Texas area.
