Abstract: This collection documents the activities of labor and civic leader, Mansfield M. McKnight, and his wife, Reecy W. McKnight. Mansfield McKnight served in leadership roles for several labor organizations in Fort Worth and Texas, including the Fort Worth Typographical Union, Local 198 and the Fort Worth Trades Assembly. He also served on the Fort Worth City Council and as Mayor Pro Tem for the City of Fort Worth. His wife, Reecy W. McKnight, completed his city council term upon his death and went on to serve three more terms in the office. Collection materials include correspondence, photographs, clippings, scrapbooks, programs, printed material, booklets, and badges.

Biographical Note

Mansfield M. McKnight (1905-1956) was an active labor and civic leader in Fort Worth, Texas. He was born in Tyler, Texas in 1905 and became a printer in Fort Worth at the age of 20. McKnight later became a member of the Fort Worth Typographical Union, Local 198 and held many offices within the organization including President, Vice President, and Secretary-Treasurer. Other labor organizations in which McKnight served in leadership roles included the Texas Federation of Labor, Fort Worth Trades Assembly, Newspaper Union Council, and Texas Allied Printing Trades Council. His civic activities included several years as a city councilman, including serving as Mayor Pro Tem, for the city of Fort Worth. When McKnight died in 1956, his wife, Reecy W. McKnight (1907-1998), was appointed to complete her husband's term of office on the city council and went on to win three consecutive terms from 1957 to 1961.

Scope and Contents

Collection contains correspondence, photographs, programs, newspaper clippings, resolutions, constitutions and by-laws, charter, booklets, badges, and scrapbooks. Includes Texas Senate Resolution No. 75 in memory of Mansfield M. McKnight. Scrapbooks include clippings and photos depicting the labor and political career of Mansfield M. McKnight; the city council career and activities of Reecy McKnight following her husband's death; and clippings about the activities of their children, Joan McKnight Stutts and Mansfield Dolan McKnight. Also included are clippings about Charles E. McKnight's race for Tarrant County Democratic chairman in 1948; convention programs, a history, and constitutions of the International Typographical Union; and a constitution and printed materials of Fort Worth Typographical Union, Local 198.
