Biographical Note

Mary McLarry Bywaters, 1904-1988, was a graduate of Belmont College, Nashville, Tennessee, and of Southern Methodist University, where she earned both a B.A. and a B.S. degree. She began her career as a professional musician, teaching piano in the Dallas area. However, her interests eventually turned to the art of dance, to which she devoted many years of service. Through her efforts on behalf of such organizations as the Dallas Dance Council, The Dallas Civic Ballet and the Southwestern Regional Ballet Association, Inc., Mary Bywaters helped establish a firm foundation of support for dance in her region. Her husband, Jerry Bywaters, was a former art professor at Southern Methodist University and a former Director of the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts. Their daughter, Jerry Bywaters Cochran, contributed to the art of dance as a gifted performer, as a professor of dance at Texas Christian University and as a teacher at her own dance studio in Dallas.
