Historical Sketch of the Buildings of Texas series

The Buildings of Texas multi-volume publication is a part of the Buildings of the United States series. Administered by the Society of Architectural Historians (SAH), the goal of the project is to document the extensive built environment of the United States. The Buildings of the United States began with the March 1993 publication of the Buildings of Iowa. At the time of Buildings of Texas's publication, 21 books have been published covering 16 states, two cities (Pittsburgh, PA and Savannah, GA), and Washington, D.C.

In 1999, Stephen Fox, an architectural historian and lecturer at Rice University, asked Gerald Moorhead to spearhead the publication of the Texas edition. Moorhead submitted a proposal to the SAH in 2000, which was accepted. Over the course of the next 19 years, Moorhead oversaw the project as editor, researcher, writer, and photographer. Other contributors include James W. Steely, W. Dwayne Jones, Anna Mod, John C. Ferguson, Cheryl Caldwell Ferguson, Mario L. Sánchez, Stephen Fox, Willis C. Winters, Mark Gunderson, Jay C. Henry, and Joel Warren Barna. When SAH began its new contract with the University of Virginia Press, Moorhead convinced the new publisher to expand Texas coverage to two volumes. The first volume, Buildings of Texas: Central, South, and Gulf Coast, was published in 2013. The second volume, Buildings of Texas: East, North Central, Panhandle and South Plains, and West was published in 2019.

Scope and Content of the collection

The Buildings of Texas collection documents the research, writing, and editing of the Building of Texas publication that originated as a one volume work and later expanded into a two-volume publication. Spanning 1942-2017, records include photographic materials, publication drafts, administrative records, and research material. This collection is comprised of a wide range of document types including maps, brochures, newspaper clippings, and photographs taken while writing the publication. Accruals are expected.

The collection is divided into two subgroups. These subgroups contain records created, collected, and donated by two of the collaborators, Gerald Moorhead and Mario L. Sánchez.

Gerald Moorhead served as the editor, researcher, photographer, and project manager as well as a contributing author for the publication. The majority of material in the Gerald Moorhead subgroup is comprised of photographs taken during the course of writing the books. The photographs contained in the collection include items that were used in the book, as well as some that did not make it into the publication. Additionally, as the sole photographer for the Buildings of Texas, Moorhead chose to record buildings in their contemporary state, and not use previously published photographs. The remaining material includes drafts, administrative records, expenses, contributor correspondence, fundraising materials, and research.

Mario L. Sánchez served as the author of the South Texas region section in Buildings of Texas: Central, South, and Gulf Coast. The Mario Sánchez subgroup is comprised of his writings and research about the South Texas region, the area between Corpus Christi, Laredo, and Brownsville. Material includes administrative records such as contracts, drafts, comments from SAH editors, and research material including biographies of architects, articles, books, and notes taken by Sánchez.
