Organizational History of the Society for Commercial Archeology

The Society for Commercial Archeology (SCA) is "devoted to the buildings, artifacts, structures, signs, and symbols of the 20th century commercial landscape," with a focus on North America. Founded in 1977, SCA holds conferences, tours, and publishes both a journal, SCA Journal, and a quarterly newsletter, Road Notes, in support of its mission.

Arising from the Meeting on Commercial Archeology held at the University of Vermont on November 20, 1976, individuals interested in roadside architecture began efforts to formally organize a group dedicated to its preservation and advocacy. After a second and third meeting on January 23, 1977, and February 27, 1977, respectively, further discussions were held on the viability of an organization and developing “scope, goals, and purposes of the organization.” These efforts materialized with the first official meeting of the Society for Commercial Archeology on March 27, 1977, at the office of Dan Scully (a founding member) in Harrisville, New Hampshire. SCA was incorporated as a nonprofit organization in Vermont by the Internal Revenue Service on June 29, 1978. With thirteen people on its Board of Directors, the Society for Commercial Archeology was based primarily in New England throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. Conferences were held in Northeastern United States. Efforts were made to expand the organization to a more national scale through the recruitment of board members and conferences outside the East Coast. Conferences in Miami, Florida (1981) and Detroit, Michigan (1988) were seen as essential to the expansion of the organization. By 1990, membership rose to 600 members with conferences held all over the United States. Between 1978-1993, SCA sporadically published SCA Newsjournal, a combination of a newsletter and journal. The publication was formally split into a quarterly newsletter, SCA News and a semi-annual journal, SCA Journal. In 2004, the newsletter's name was changed to Road Notes. At the closing of the 20th century, SCA's membership was around 780 members. Entering the new millennium, conferences were held all over the continental United States. In 2005, SCA had 523 members. SCA celebrated its 40th anniversary in Cincinnati, Ohio in October 2017.

Scope and Content of the records

Spanning primarily from 1977-2017, the Society for Commercial Archeology (SCA) documents the activities and business of the organization and provides visual and cultural artifacts about commercial archeology and roadside architecture. With a bulk of the collection from 1977-2008, the collection documents various components of roadside architecture including diners, bus stations, neon signs, historic highways, and other commercial landmarks in the United States. Record types include minutes, financial reports, budgets, publications, pamphlets, postcards, newspaper clippings, articles, agendas, essays, photographs, slides, and correspondence.

The first accessions in 2016-2017 were primarily obtained through former board members Beth Dodd, Mildred "Millie" O'Connell, Jen Jennings, and Gregory Smith. Their records span the business of the organization such as membership, budget, planning tours and conferences, elections, memorandums, reports and correspondence between board members, and other related topics. Much of the later administrative files were received from Beth Dodd, a former Board member and co-organizer of the 2008 SCA conference in New Mexico. The records reflect her participation in SCA conferences (1998-2002, 2004, 2007-2008), notes from board meetings, her service on the Nomination Committee, and general correspondence. Similarly, a portion of the early organizational records and correspondence are attributed to Millie O’Connell and Jen Jennings, former SCA board members.

A sizeable portion of the collection documents the publication process of the SCA News, the quarterly newsletter, from 1994-1999. Records related to these publications include correspondence sent to then editor, Gregory Smith, essays, newspaper clippings, articles, postcards, and photographs submitted mostly by members for publication. The records provide an insight into what occurred in commercial archeology at the time of publication. Circulated serials of the journal and newsletter can be found at The University of Texas at Austin's Architecture and Planning Library and can be searched through the UT Catalog.

The collection also contains visual and cultural artifacts documenting restaurants, highways, diners, drive-ins, and other related businesses. These artifacts include stickers, business cards, postcards, and pamphlets. Businesses covered include international chains such as McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Pizza Hut, White Castle, and Greyhound, as well as regional mom-and-pop chains including Rein's, Hilltop Steak House, Bertha's Restaurant & Bar. Information artifacts such as clippings and articles also document the commercial landscape.

The next accession was received fall 2017 from former board member, Michael "Bert" Bedeau. The organization and compiling of the material can be attributed to Susan Shearer, a former board member from 1980-1988. Records include minutes, agendas, administrative records, correspondence, subject files, and related publications predominately dating from the early 1970s to the late 1980s.

B1: Society for Commercial Archeology journals, 1978-2018
Subseries Abstract
Records include journals published by SCA spanning 1978-2017. SCA NewsJournal, first published in 1978, was introduced one year after the founding of the organization. The serial was published sporadically with frequent gaps in between each publication. In 1993, the SCA Board created two formal publications, a journal and quarterly newsletter. Journal publications retained the SCA NewsJournal name until 1995. It was subsequently changed to SCA Journal. SCA Journal closely mirrors its predecessor and continues SCA NewsJournal publication numbering. Content focuses on scholarly and lengthy discussion on all aspects of 20th century commercial archeology. Since 1996, the journal has been published quarterly (Spring/Fall).

Subseries Abstract
Subseries includes the newsletters created by the Society for Commercial Archeology spanning from 1993-2018. Beginning in 1993, with the dissolution of SCA NewsJournal into two formal publications, SCA Road Notes has gone through stylistic and editorial changes. In general, the newsletter primarily contains news and member queries in a condensed format. The name of the newsletter was originally SCA News and was changed to SCA Road Notes with the Winter 2004 publication. The newsletter is published quarterly with spring, summer, fall, and winter editions. The SCA has irregularly published an electronic newsletter, Roadside Roundup.

Series C: Society for Commercial Archeology events, 1960-2017, undated

Series Abstract
Items in this series document the conferences and tours planned by Society for Commercial Archeology spanning 1979-2008. Record types include guides, budgets, pamphlets, correspondence, publicity materials, and planning materials.
C1: Conferences, 1960-2017, undated
Subseries Abstract
Conferences have been a part of SCA since its inception. Beginning in 1977, the idea was to hold national conferences biennially with smaller, regional ones held in between. National conferences tended to be outside the New England area with the purpose of expanding the organization. Beginning in the early 1990s, regional conferences were retired to focus on yearly national conferences. Please note that aside from the 2008 conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico, few records extensively document the remaining conferences from the planning perspective. Records for the 2008 Albuquerque, New Mexico conference include conference planning and public relations materials, conference registrant packet materials, conference documentation including attendees notes and photographs. Most folders contain conference programs, tour guides, and publicity materials, and materials procured during the conference i.e. business cards, session notes, sign-up sheets. Pictures documenting the walking tours and SCA’s 10th anniversary party in 1987 are also included. An electronic list of SCA conferences is available as an access tool to assist patrons in their research. Click here to download a Word version of the list.

Subseries Abstract
Tours were a major focal point for Society for Commercial Archeology during its formative years. Given the small size of the organization, tours mostly occurred in the New England area. The subseries documents tours in the 1980s with a couple in early 2000s. Record types include pamphlets, correspondence, clippings, magazines, and publicity and planning materials for each event. Most of these records can be attributed to Susan Shearer and Millie O'Connell, former SCA board members.
