The Charles W. Moore Archives: Project records

Charles Willard Moore, renowned architect, writer of numerous articles and books, and
teacher, was born in Benton Harbor, Michigan in 1925. He earned a Bachelor of Architecture
Degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor (1947), and Master of Fine Art and
Doctoral Degrees from Princeton University by 1957. His academic posts include serving as
Dean, Chairman, and faculty member at five different universities, including the University
of California at Berkeley, Yale University, and The University of Texas at Austin. A
prolific architect, Moore completed 180 commissions, and served as principal architect in
firms in California, Connecticut, and Texas. Two of his most noted, collaborative works
include the Sea Ranch, a recreational community near San Francisco, built in the 1960s, and
the design of the Kresge College at the University of California at Santa Cruz in 1973.

The Charles W. Moore archives is partially processed. The collection will be arranged into
multiple finding aids, including personal, professional, and faculty papers, office records,
and project records. In addition, The University of Texas Online Catalog lists over 5,000
architectural monographs, exhibition catalogs, and works of fiction that formed the
architect's personal library. The Charles Moore Library is housed off-site at the Charles
Moore House in Austin, Texas. For a complete listing of the Moore Library holdings, please
refer to The University of Texas Online Catalog and do a call number search for "Moore." You
may also contact the archive's staff for more information.
The project records consist of documents related to the planning, designing, and
construction of Charles Moore's architectural projects. Records in Series A (Project files)
include correspondence, notes, specifications, reports, photographs, sketches, some plans,
and a few drawings. The materials in this subseries are organized alphabetically by project
name. Dates reflect any dates noted on the records within the project files, not necessarily
the completion date for the project. The records are partially processed and project names
have not been normalized. Records for one project may appear in disparate folders.
Drawings are listed separately under the Series B. See series abstract for arrangement.

Series B: Drawings |
|
Series Abstract |
|
Entries are indexed in alphabetical order by Client's last name. If the client is not
identifiable, the field will remain blank. Entries without client names are sorted by
Project Name and listed before those that provide client's names. Project names are
supplied by the cataloger, as title blocks on the drawings prove to be inconsistent and
many drawings are not labeled. Dates are offered if they can be derived from the
drawings or gathered from other authoritative sources. The term "drawing" includes both
original works (such as pencil on trace paper, or ink on tracing cloth) as well as
copies (such as sepia prints, blue line prints, etc.). |
