Administrative History

The Archives & Records Program Area is the oldest department in the oldest state agency in Texas. A&R is first and foremost responsible for the management and preservation of the land grant records and the map collection of the GLO. In the modern era, A&R also provides access to GLO collection to the public. Since 2003, the department has engaged in the wholesale digitization of the land grants and map collection with over 2.5 million digital objects online and accessible through the main GLO website. Finally, A&R collaborates with school teachers, museums, and other groups to preserve and provide important Texas history resources to the people of Texas.

Scope and Contents of the Records

The 21 boxes of records in this collection, sourced from many former employees, document the bureaucratic work accomplished in the modern era as the department transitioned from paper based indexing to computer data management. The collection also documents the rapid changes affecting American office culture throughout the 1980s-1990s. Future employees of the department may be interested in the hand written indexes to the many archival collections related to land grant programs that are now online.

Scope and Contents of the Records
The collected office files of Joan Kilpatrick (Boxes 22-26) document the activities of the map vault for the years 1987-2008. Activities documented include map conservation and research on methods and equipment employed to scan and present GLO maps to the public on the internet. There are also newspaper clippings documenting the Archives & Records department and the GLO. Due to the large and unorganized nature of the records, only minimal description was done. It is unknown how these records could be used in the future, but many of them document both the early efforts by the GLO to scan maps and documents and the state of the digital imaging industry during its early development.
