Biographical Sketch

Max Evans, prolific western author, director, and screenwriter, was born in Ropes, Texas, on August 29, 1925. Evans later relocated to northeastern New Mexico, the so-called Hi-Lo Country, which would serve as the backdrop for many of his novels and films. Evans has published over twenty-five works, perhaps most notably The Hi-Lo Country and The Rounders—both of which were made into films. Evans is the recipient of multiple Spur, Wrangler, and Owen Wister Awards. Evans was the subject of a biography by Slim Randles entitled Ol’ Max Evans: The First Thousand Years, which was made into a documentary by Lorene Mills, David Leach, and Paul Barnes. He was also heavily involved in the founding of the New Mexico Film Commission. Evans is an avid watercolorist and has interests in mining. As of 2018, he lived with his wife, Pat, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
