Biographical Sketch

This collection represents much of the research notes accumulated by Betty Zachary Slaughter (1925-1999), who was once married to George M. Slaughter III (1924-2008), and mother of the collection’s donors, Cynthia Slaughter Pattison, George M. Slaughter IV, and J. Mack Slaughter. Other materials in the collection were assembled by Janice Wyly Slaughter (1902-1998), who was married to George M. Slaughter II (1897-1978).

C. C. Slaughter and Company, a cattle breeding venture, was established in 1873 by Christopher Columbus (C. C.) Slaughter. Around 1877 C. C.’s ranch, the Long S, was one of the largest ranches in West Texas. His large holdings helped earn C. C. the title, “Cattle King of Texas.”

Born in 1837 in Sabine County, Texas, C. C. established a frontier ranch in Palo Pinto County, Texas, in 1857 with his father, George Webb Slaughter, and his brothers. During the civil war, C. C. served in the frontier militia and in the Texas Rangers. Afterwards, he drove cattle on the Chisholm Trail and later moved operations to West Texas where, by 1905, he owned 40,000 cattle and controlled over one million acres.

C. C. married twice, first to Cynthia Anna Jowell in 1861, with whom he had five children, and then to Carrie Averill in 1877, with whom he had four children. Before his death in 1919, he had founded the American National Bank of Dallas (1884), and cofounded the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association (1877), the Texas Baptist Education Commission (1897), and the Baylor Hospital of Dallas, Texas (1904).

Much of this collection deals with the descendants of George Morgan Slaughter, who was the eldest son of C. C. Slaughter and C. C.’s first wife, Cynthia Ann Jowell. Born in Palo Pinto, Texas, on November 2, 1862, George received formal training in Texas schools and at the Virginia Military Institute. Later he served in the Spanish-American War. He married Alice Louise Donohoo (Allie D.), and together they had three children. Managing ranches for his father in West Texas and New Mexico, George became a prominent cattle breeder and was elected president of the Panhandle Cattle Raisers Association in 1910. He moved to Roswell, New Mexico, in 1900 and served as president of the American National Bank. On July 15, 1915, George passed away after being struck by lightning and was buried in Roswell.

Scope and Content

The Slaughter Family Papers represents much of the research notes accumulated by Betty Zachary Slaughter. Other materials in the collection were assembled by Janice Wyly Slaughter (1902-1998), who was married to George M. Slaughter II (1897-1978). Some of this material had been previously copied by the Southwest Collection. This collection serves as an important complement to the several other Slaughter collections in the Southwest Collection, especially the Papers of George M. Slaughter.

The Papers contains correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, and assorted printed material relating to the Slaughter family, particularly its genealogy. Some materials pertain to the operation of the Slaughter Ranch, as well as other ranching, agricultural, and banking interests. A portion is also the research material of Dr. David J. Murrah, identified and utilized during the composition of his scholarly works about the Slaughters.

Oversized maps, photographs, landscape prints, and similar material are also present, as are 2 framed items and several dozen artifacts, such as bibles, playing cards, pins, passport covers, a fraternity paddle, and other items.

Audio/visual material in a variety of media formats and content are housed in the collection, and require advance notice to prepare for use.

124 books were catalogued separately from the collection. They may be found via a search of our online Library Catalog.
