Billy Faier, born in Brooklyn in 1930 and raised in Woodstock, got to Texas as quickly as
he could, bringing his banjo to Marathon in the Trans-Pecos. Before that, however, during
the folk music revival he set the standard for the five-string, recording for Riverside
Records beginning in 1957 and performing on Broadway in The Unsinkable
Molly Brown. He was a political activist, a performer and fellow-traveler with the
likes of Woody Guthrie, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Jack Kerouac, and others. Pete Seeger praised
his picking, and he cut two albums with John Sebastian.
The CD in the collection was recorded by Lubbock folk cowboy musician Andy Hedges at
Billy’s home in Marathon, featuring Faier talking briefly about the song, then singing to
his banjo accompaniment. The song is “The Horse with a Union Label”, taught to him by his
mother, who was a communist organizer in the 1920s.
The Faier photographs and sound recording have been digitized. The electronic files are
designated as PA numbers within parentheses in the listings below. Photo captions are those
of the donor. Other than as noted, the collection is in good condition and is part of the
Crossroads of Music archive, which owes a particular debt to Fern Malkine-Falvey for aiding
in the identification of the Woodstock folks in the photo collection.
The collection is open for research. Copyright is retained by the authors of items in this
collection, or their descendants, as stipulated by U.S. copyright law.
Some archival collections may be housed in storage outside of the Southwest
Collection/Special Collections Library building. Requests to retrieve such materials may
take up to 10 business days to complete. Please contact our Reference Department in advance
to arrange retrieval.
Audio, video, and film recordings may not be immediately accessible due to format,
condition, or copyright status. All items must be digitized prior to patron use. Please
contact the Reference Librarian at least 10 days in advance to make viewing
arrangements.
