Biographical Sketch

Thurman Trew, born December 20, 1902, near Wellington in Collingsworth County, was a Panhandle farmer and rancher and first-rate Texas-style fiddler who also worked the mandolin, banjo, guitar and French harp when needed. During the Depression he drove a school bus and fronted the Perryton Playboys band, traveling by Ford car with the bass fiddle lashed to the top, along with the six-volt Gibson public address system, battery-powered until the REA strung the lines.

Country dances of the era were held in any barn or public building with a decent floor. Admission was 25 cents, but pretty girls who were good dancers got in free. The bootlegging trade was kept strictly outside the building. In later decades Thurman took the lead in organizing and competing in fiddle contests, often supplying the sound system and any instruments needed.

Thurman married Oma Simmons in 1927. They and their two sons, Delbert and Don, made the rounds of the country dances together, with the boys often bedded down on a "Methodist pallet" of quilts on the stage behind the band. Delbert grew up to play multiple instruments (especially piano and saxophone) and worked with the Carl Day orchestra across the MidWest. He returned to manage the family ranch and perform across the Panhandle with his band Trew Harmony and players such as fiddler Frankie McWhorter.

Delbert has now retired from ranching to do metal sculpture and curate the Devil's Rope Barbwire Museum in McLean, Texas. For decades he has been a feature writer and weekly columnist for the Amarillo Globe News. He writes fiction, has published several books, and contributes to Texas Escapes and other on-line and traditional publications. He is the donor of this collection.

Scope and Content

In this archive are recordings of West Texas fiddle bands and at-home jamborees in a variety of audio media, plus a book of lyrics to popular country songs. Many unique performances by famous fiddlers are included. Recordings have been digitized, and the listings include the collector's catalog number (designated #), the length of the digital version and its AV number for easy accession. In addition, there are a good many digital-only items, especially scans of a scrapbook and a 1938-1939 John Deere "Farmer's Pocket Ledger" distributed by Perryton Implement Company. The ledger lists concert dates and payments to the Perryton Playboy Band members during the period. The scrapbook contains dozens of colorful snapshost of professional performances, contests, and informal "jam sessions" in various West Texas homes, as well as newspaper clippings and biographical information. The collection is in good condition and is part of the Crossroads of Music archive.
