Biographical Sketch

Craig Alderson, with his brother Bruce, opened a garage recording studio in Lubbock as an adjunct to their band Pocket around 1975. Their original equipment was limited to two 4-track recorders, used to great effect to help a local group, called The Nelsons, become finalists on MTV's “Basement Tapes” competition in 1983 with “I Don't Mind”. In the early 1990s the brothers opened Broadway Studios in Lubbock, where most of the material in this archive was recorded.

One of the artists, Jay Lemons, son of Joe and Natalie Lemons, attended Coronado High School in Lubbock, where he played in the band. After studies at Texas Tech University and North Texas State University, Lemons taught vocal music at South Plains College. Today he performs on keyboards, writes and produces music in addition to private instruction in Austin. Other featured artists in the collection include Albert Mendoza, Sherry Holley Adams, Spinning Ginny, Plum Jam, Sonlighters, Los Viciosos, and Cervantez and Company. Broadway Studios also produced many ads, especially for local radio and TV.

Scope and Content

The collection is comprised of analog master tapes of ½” 16 tack (10” reels), ¼” 2 track masters (10” reels), and ¼” 2 track masters (7” reels). Reels are listed in order by their studio log numbers and a second group for the recovered abandoned property. The log numbers are found in parentheses behind each item. The mold-damaged material, found in a flooded basement of the former Reeves Photo Studio, lacked log numbers. The Crossroads of Music Archive has applied for grant support to attempt to build digital files from these reels.

Many recordings in this collection are of aspiring musical acts from West Texas and Eastern New Mexico. Others are radio advertising spots created for regional clients. The collection also includes two CDs, one of Jay Lemon's See You In Paradise from 1999 and one unlabeled and undated of an unknown funk/jazz band. The collection is in good condition and is part of the Crossroads of Music Archive.
