Biographical Sketch

Vine Deloria, Jr. was born in South Dakota on March 26, 1933. An enrolled member of the Standing Rock Indian Reservation, he was son and grandson of Episcopal missionaries and Yankton Dakota leaders. He studied at Kent School, Iowa State University and Lutheran School of Theology before earning a law degree from University of Colorado in 1970. The previous year he published Custer Died for Your Sins, the first of his twenty books, most of which center on theology, Native American history, tribal sovereignty, legal and civil rights.

Deloria served as a U.S. Marine, in tenured faculty positions, as visiting scholar, and as executive director of the National Congress of American Indians. In 1977 he was named to the board of the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI). As a consulting attorney he participated in the U.S. v. Washington case of 1974 that upheld tribal rights to salmon fishing in the Pacific Northwest. He was taken by an aneurysm at his home in Golden, Colorado, on November 13, 2005.

A devoted music fan, Deloria had broad knowledge and eclectic taste. That is clear in his personal collection of recorded music, which came to the Crossroads archive with the cooperation of Bobby Bridger and the Deloria family, especially his wife Barbara and son Philip, the noted historian. The Vine Deloria, Jr. Papers are cataloged at Northwest Indian College, which presents an annual symposium in his honor. The Smithsonian Institution library of the NMAI is also named to honor his contributions.

Scope and Content

The Vine Deloria Jr. Collection encompasses recordings of music and spoken word materials in a wide variety of formats, including Edison discs, 78-, 45- and 33-1/3-rpm records, cassette tapes and compact discs (audio and photo). An AV number in the title designates an item which has already been digitized. Of special note is material related to the Lakota, Oneida and Inuit, as well as oral history. Other than where noted and for age, usage and some limited damage from smoke related to a house fire, the collection is in good condition and is part of the Crossroads of Music archive.

Access Restrictions

The collection is open for research. Copyright is retained by the authors of items in this collection, or their descendants, as stipulated by U.S. copyright law. Audio and visual recordings may need to be reformatted prior to use and require advance notice to the Reference Librarian.
