Historical Sketch

The 8th Texas Legislature met from November 7, 1859, to April 9, 1861, during regular session, from January 21, 1861, to February 9, 1861, in a first called session, and from March 18, 1861, to April 9, 1861, in an adjourned session. Hardin R. Runnels served as governor until December 21, 1859. Sam Houston served as governor until March 16, 1861. Edward Clark was lieutenant governor and Marion DeKalb Taylor was speaker of the house. All members of the House of Representatives and about half of the members of the Senate were elected in 1859. Texas voted to secede from the United States and join the Confederacy during this legislative session.
