Benjamin Franklin "Frank" Hardin, was born in
Franklin County, Georgia on January 25, 1803, to Swan and Jerusha Blackburn Hardin.
Frank Hardin moved to Texas in 1826 and served under Stephen F. Austin in the
campaign to put down the Fredonian Rebellion of 1827. In 1831 he was elected
secretary of the ayuntamiento of Liberty and served as surveyor of the Atascosito
District from 1834 to 1836. On November 29, 1835, he was appointed first lieutenant
of infantry by the General Council of the Provisional Government of Texas. He took
part in the siege of Bexar in December 1835 and went on to serve as first lieutenant
in Captain William M. Logan's Company until June 1836. A veteran of the Battle of
San Jacinto, Frank Hardin carried the victory dispatch for Sam Houston to the United
States border. From July 7 to October 7, 1836, he commanded a volunteer company and
joined an expedition against the Indians.
Frank Hardin served as surveyor of Liberty County (1838-1845) and district surveyor
(1849-1852). On September 6, 1841, he was elected colonel of the 2nd Regiment of the
2nd Brigade of the Republic of Texas Militia. In 1857, the year Hardin County was
formed from Liberty County and named in honor of the Hardin family, he served as a
member of the Texas House of Representatives from Liberty County.
Frank Hardin married Cynthia A. O'Brien, daughter of Ann Berwick and Christie
O'Brien, on August 15, 1839. They had six children: Kaleta "Shattie" (1840-1884), William F. "Bee" (1841-1908), Camilla "Mimmie" (1843-1927), Christy (1848-1867), Cynthia Ann "Nan" (1848-1928), and Helen (1853-1914). Frank Hardin
died at Liberty, Texas on April 20, 1878.
"Bee" Hardin served in the 9th (Nichols') Regiment,
Texas Infantry and then Waul's Texas Legion during the Civil War. He married Eugenie
Stanwood. Christy Hardin served in Company I, 25th Texas Cavalry. He was killed in a
hunting accident in 1867. Nan Hardin married John F. Skinner in approximately 1872
and the couple moved to Lampasas. Kaleta and Helen Hardin never married.
Camilla Hardin married George Washington Davis in 1867. They had four children who
survived to adulthood: Agatha (1870 - ?), Wirt (1873-1945), Geraldine (1876-1961),
and Percy (1883-1948). They eventually settled in Dallas.
Geraldine married Robert Wade Humphreys, and they had one daughter, Kalita
(1914-1954). Geraldine Humphreys established the Humphreys Foundation to benefit
historical and cultural endeavors, including the Geraldine Humphreys Cultural
Center, which was built on the Hardin family home site in Liberty; it was dedicated
and opened in 1970.
Robert Wade Humphreys was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on May 30, 1875. He was a graduate
of the University of Cincinnati Law School. He moved to Texas in 1912 and first
resided in San Antonio. Humphreys moved to Liberty during World War I and soon
thereafter assumed the post of county foods administrator. President Warren G.
Harding, who had been a close friend in Ohio, appointed him Collector of Customs for
the Port of Galveston in 1921, a position he held until 1929. From that time he and
his family maintained residences in both Liberty and Galveston.
Humphreys was active in civic affairs wherever he resided. He was one of the original
directors of the Liberty Chamber of Commerce, served as high priest in the Dayton
Chapter, Masonic Order, and was active in helping stage the Trinity Valley
Exposition. Humphreys was one of the pioneers in pushing the Trinity River
development program and was an influential leader in the Republican Party for many
years. He served as president of the Texas Society, Sons of the American
Revolution.
R.W. Humphreys died in Galveston on January 1, 1950 after suffering a stroke a few
days before. His ashes are interred at Grace Episcopal Church in Galveston,
Texas.

William Hardin, brother of Benjamin Franklin Hardin, was born in Franklin County,
Georgia, on March 25, 1801. In the early 1800s, the family moved to Maury County,
Tennessee. By 1825 Hardin was the editor of the Columbia (Tennessee) Reporter. By 1827, he had settled in what is now Liberty
County. He was elected commissary of police in Anahuac in May 1831 and the same year
served as secretary of the board for the town of Liberty.
William took part in the Anahuac Disturbances of 1831–1832 and in March 1832, he was
elected alcalde of Anahuac. From 1831 to 1836, he practiced law and engaged in land
speculation while maintaining residences in both Liberty and Anahuac. He served as a
delegate to the Convention of 1833 in San Felipe de Austin. William was elected
alcalde of Liberty in 1835. In 1836, he served as postmaster and the first judge for
the jurisdiction of Liberty, housing Mexican officers taken prisoners at the Battle
of San Jacinto at his Liberty plantation. In 1838 Hardin became one of the original
ten proprietors (founders) of the city of Galveston, where he also established a
residence. In 1839 he was reappointed as postmaster at Liberty.
William married Sarah Loony in 1829; they had two children. He died of yellow fever
in Galveston on June 28, 1839. He was buried in the Hardin family cemetery north of
Liberty.
