Marcel Moraud was born in Roziers St. George, France, on October 19, 1886. He
completed his undergraduate work at the Sorbonne in Paris and obtained a
postgraduate degree from the University of Edinburgh. He served with the French Army
in World War I and, after being wounded, was appointed to the French High Commission
in Washington, D.C. in 1918. Moraud taught at the University of Minnesota, Princeton
University, and the University of Toronto before beginning a long career at Rice
Institute (now Rice University) in Houston. He was appointed head of the Department
of Romance Languages in 1924, a position he held until his retirement in 1956. He
advised the college's Fondren Library on the purchase of books, enabling it to
become one of the leading sources for study of French culture and civilization in
the South.
During his career, Moraud served as a visiting professor at Cornell University,
Middlebury College, Emory University, Wheaton College, and Wells College. He served
as the director of the American Foundation in Paris and lectured in Madrid, London,
Oxford, Glasgow, Brussels, and Paris. Moraud authored several books and numerous
articles on literature and French-American relations. He participated in many
projects and events that documented the role of the French in Texas. During the 1936
Texas Centennial he served as an advisor for an exhibit in Dallas and provided input
on historical markers. He assisted with the 250th anniversary commemoration of the
death of the French explorer Robert Cavalier, sieur de La Salle, in 1937 and was
instrumental in arranging for a French delegation to visit Texas and tour various
historic sites. In 1956 he advised the Daughters of the Republic of Texas on the
restoration of the French Legation in Austin and spoke at the dedication ceremony.
He assisted in the preparation of exhibit panels on the role of the French in Texas
for the 1968 HemisFair in San Antonio.
The American Association of Teachers of French and the Modern Language Association
conferred life memberships on Moraud. He was decorated with the Ordre des Palmes
Académiques and the order of the Legion of Honor by the French government in honor
of his efforts in the area of French-American relations. He died January 26, 1978,
in Houston and was buried in his native France.
