Liberty, the county seat of Liberty County, Texas, is located on State Highway 146
and U.S. Highway 90 in the south central part of the county. The discovery of oil in
the South Liberty field on January 1, 1925, brought on immense changes and
population growth, which went from 865 in 1900 to 3,087 in 1940. The population
again rose to 4,161 in 1950. In that year a veneer mill, a cannery, a commercial
printing plant, and an ice plant contributed to the economy. Population rose 5,591
in 1970, and 7,733 in 1990, when the town had 213 businesses. The population in 2010
was 8,397 with 526 businesses operating here.
In Texas a league of land consists of 4428.4 acres. A tract is a specified parcel of
land, of no particular size. A subdivision is a tract that has been divided into
smaller parcels, or lots, usually for the purpose of sale or development of the
land. In Liberty a subdivision plat for a proposed development was submitted to the
appropriate governing authority (the city council or county commissioners) for
approval and then filed in the county clerk's office.
