Abstract: Collection of publications by Dr. Josiah Cox Russell, a professor of history at Texas A&I University in the 1970s. In 1971 Dr. Russell had been awarded the Prestigious Piper Professor Award from the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation. His work was primarily on medieval demography.

Historical Note

Born September 3, 1900, at Richmond, Indiana, Russell was schooled at Earlham College, A.B.,1922; University of Rome, 1920-1921; Harvard University, A.M., 1923, Ph.D., 1926. His first professional position was as an Assistant in History at Radcliff College from 1923 to 1924. He went on to become an Assistant in History from 1924 to 1926 at Harvard University. Moving west, Dr. Russell became an Assistant Professor of History from 1927 to 1929 at Colorado College and then full Professor of History and Social Science in 1929 at New Mexico Normal School. In 1930 Dr. Russell was awarded The Guggenheim Fellowship for Humanities for publications on his systematic examination for biographical data of the manuscripts of certain Latin authors of the thirteenth century England. Josiah Cox Russell's parents were Elbert Russell (1871-1951) and Lieuetta Lillian Cox Russell (1872-1969). He married Ruth Winslow Russell and they had one child, a girl, Joan Russell in 1939. Josiah Cox Russell died November 12, 1996 and was buried in the Craig Memorial Park in Saint Augustine, Florida.

Scope and Contents

The collection contains journal publications from 1929 to the 1970s. Dr. Russell published articles on urban medieval towns and compared data on county populations. Included are materials on the Texas College of Arts and Industries, Research Stimulation Committee formed in 1965. Documents from the college's Senate Resolutions in 1975 are included in one folder.
