Historical Note

In 1985 a panel of longtime civic leaders recounted their stories of early Dallas at a meeting of Charter 100-Dallas. A concern rose that the papers of these panelists and other pioneering women would be lost or destroyed if there were not an aggressive effort to build a women’s collection. SMU Provost Ruth Morgan appointed Maureen Pastine, Director of Central University Libraries, and asked her and the Director of DeGolyer, David Farmer, to develop a proposal for a women’s archives as a separate collection in 1987.

On August 5, 1991 Maurine Pastine submitted the planning group’s report to the Provost, who placed it on the agenda for the next Academic Affairs Committee of the Board of Trustees. The proposal called for establishing “a special collection by and about women who have helped shape Southwestern culture, arts, business, social issues, government, and other spheres.” The report carried the “provisional title of Regional Center for Notable Women.” The stated objective of the Advisory Council was “to assist and to advise the librarians on collection development and such other matters as the Librarians refer to this Council.”

The First meeting of the Advisory Council for the Center for Notable Women in the Southwest was held on April 28, 1993. During the meeting the program was discussed at length, leading to a name change to Archives of Women of the Southwest. The primary mission of the Archives of Women of the Southwest is to document the historical experience of women in the Southwest, with special emphasis on Dallas and North Texas, as well as a regional focus that includes Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, and the Spanish Borderlands.
