Lorn Lambier Howard was born on November 28, 1917 in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. He studied electrical engineering at the University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia and the University of Illinois at Urbana. Dr. Howard served his country as a radioman 2nd class and electronic technician 2nd class in the U.S. Navy from 1936 to 1946. In 1941 he married Etha Johannaber, and they had three children. After receiving his doctorate from Michigan State University in 1959, he joined Southern Methodist University as professor of electrical engineering.
Over the course of his 29 years of active tenure, Dr. Howard founded the Biomedical Engineering Program in cooperation with the Southwestern Medical School, and he established the University's first Electron Microscopy Laboratory and Thin Films Laboratory. Dr. Howard worked on grant projects for NASA and the National Science Foundation. During his 13 year term as Chief Marshal to the University, he commissioned a new University seal and directed all University convocations and commencements. Since 1978, Dr. Howard has held the title of University carillonneur. Dr. Howard retired in 1988 as Professor Emeritus of Electrical Engineering; however, he continues to work on projects with the Advanced Technology Program at SMU.
