Scope and Content Note

Correspondence and financial documents dating from 1764 to 1841 document the business dealings of shoemaker John Martin from Amesbury, Massachusetts. Correspondence is comprised of five letters written to John Martin from 1813 to 1820 which refer to his shoemaking business. General correspondence consists of an 1828 letter that was not signed or addressed which offered words of comfort. Also included is an auction announcement of the estate of Daniel Brown. An undated envelope with seal addressed to Brown is included. The financial documents are comprised of a single bound manuscript account book, promissory notes and records. The account book dates from 1764 to 1840 and was started by John Martin and continued by other individuals; it includes items purchased, payments, and customer signatures. There are two dated promissory notes, one to Timothy Currier in 1817 and one to Mays written in 1820. Also included are ten records that include similar information to that found in the account book.

Organized into two series; arrangement is chronological.
