Creator Sketch

Elizabeth Hall Thompson was born January 8, 1873, in Brunswick, Missouri. She was a designer for a wholesale millinery shop, Bee Newburger, located in St. Joseph, Missouri, and later went to work for Tootle-Maddox and Wheakley at Kansas City. Mrs. Thompson was married to Edgar G. Thompson in 1898. In 1923, Thompson built the Colonial Hotel in Excelsior Springs, Missouri. In 1952, she resided in Houston, Texas.

Scope and Content Note

The Elizabeth Thompson Papers are comprised of correspondence and printed materials spanning the years of 1939 to 1948. Correspondence includes a letter from Ward Cheney to Mrs. Elizabeth Thompson referencing dress material bought at Cheney Brothers in 1898 which Mrs. Thompson had offered for display at the New York Worlds Fair. The original envelope is included. Printed Materials consists of a 1948 newspaper clipping from the Houston Post entitled "Old Lady of Gay Nineties Shows Dress in Trousseau." The article features a picture of Mrs. Thompson holding her dress, which was sought after by Robert Ripley. Also included is a postcard signed by Robert L. Ripley featuring him writing a letter.


Organized into two series; arrangement is chronological.
