He fought for Texas' independence at the battle of San Jacinto as a first lieutenant. Snell commanded the honor detachment at the funeral of Stephen F. Austin, in 1836. He was a captain in the Texas Army from April 1838 to May 1839. From 1848 to 1850, Snell served as postmaster at Houston. Snell was also a major in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. In May of 1849 Snell married Emma Hadnot of Harris County and had one daughter. Martin K. Snell died at Houston in 1865.

Scope and Content Note

The Martin K. Snell Papers are comprised of correspondence and a photograph from the years 1851 to 1864 which document the life of a Texas and Confederate soldier and postmaster of Houston. Correspondence contains six letters all written by Snell. Five are addressed to his wife Emma and pertain to business and family matters. Of note is an 1856 letter with the frank marked free for the post master. Another letter addressed to his daughter in 1864 is included in the papers; however, the letter is torn and missing parts. There is also an undated tintype of Martin K. Snell.

Organized into one series; arrangement is chronological.
