Biographical / Historical

Rice University Review began publication in June of 1966 with the first of two issues planned for the year, the second to come out in November. An official university publication, its contributors were faculty and staff members, as well as guest writers. Subjects covered included Rice research projects, professors, alumni, teaching activities, and reviews of major works written by Rice faculty. Publication continued through the Spring/Summer issue of 1976. In April 1976 the Vice President for External Affairs, reflecting on the fact that the Rice University Review had been initiated by the Development Office during the $33 million campaign as a “prestige publication,” and pointing to budget restrictions, announced that as of July 1, Sallyport would be the primary University publication for Rice alumni and the Rice University Review would be discontinued.

The Editorial Advisory Board of the Rice University Review was appointed by the President. It was made up of faculty representing a comprehensive range of departments, a representative of Information Services, and several representatives of the Alumni Association. Initially the acting editor was Leland L. Estes of the Development Office. The person credited with editing Volume 1 and the Spring/Summer issue of Volume 2 was Ross Phares. With the Fall/Winter issue of Volume 2, Nathan Broch took over as editor and served in that role for the duration of publication.
