Biographical Note

Edward Wolf Kilman was born at Ennis, Texas in 1896, moved to Houston in 1902, was educated in Houston public schools and Sam Houston Normal Institute (Huntsville, Tex.), and the Texas National Guard Training Camp. He was secretary to State Senator Dean, Lt. Governor Lynch Davidson, and Senator Jeff Strickland. He joined the Houston Post in 1925, becoming Austin correspondent in 1927, editor in 1943, and in 1962 editor emeritus of the editorial page. In 1946 he went with other American newspaper editors to the European theater of war as quest of the army and returned to England in 1949 to observe Britain's experiment in socialism, his articles being published nationally. He wrote a Sunday column, "Texas Heartbeat", many editorials specializing on Texas history and politics, and actively engaged in writing on political campaigns and elections. With Louis Ward Kemp, he wrote the book Texas Musketeers, and a booklet on the San Jacinto battle and campaign. With Theon Wright he wrote a biography of Hugh Roy Cullen,1881-1957 , published in 1954, and with Charles E. Gilbert he wrote The Cullens: Two Great Texans. His book Cannibal Coast, a history of the Karankawa Indians, was published in 1960. He wrote a biography of Ross S. Sterling which was not published. In 1940 he was given an award of merit by the American Legion for the outstanding editorial of the year. In 1944 he was awarded the Good Citizenship Medal by the Paul Carrington Chapter of the The Sons of the American Revolution, and was awarded citations from the Managing Editors Association of Texas and the Associated Press.

Among his civic activities, he was on the boards of the Houston Boy Scouts Council and the American Red Cross, was a member and president of the Houston Downtown Kiwanis Club, president of the Harris County Historical Society, a member of the Texas Philosophical Society, the American Academy of Political and Social Science, Houston Chamber of Commerce, and was an honorary member of the Sons of the Republic of Texas. He attended the Presbyterian Church. In 1945 he was appointed to serve on the Centennial of Statehood Commission, and in 1955 was appointed to the Texas State Parks Board. He was married and had one daughter and two grandchildren. Kilman retired May 1, 1965, and died on June 8, 1969

Scope and Contents

The collection contains personal and business correspondence, articles and books by Ed Kilman and other writers. It starts with correspondence, items of personal interest, articles on him, and information on the organizations with which he was involved. It continues with correspondence relating to his work with the Houston Post, some chronicologically, some under the correspondent's name. Then his "Texas Heartbeat" columns, copies of his speeches, copies of his articles including a series on the history of the Houston Post, followed by articles and information listed by subject matter, including correspondence and information on his European trips. Next are writings, manuscripts, research materials on his books, both published and unpublished, followed by research materials, topics of interest, manuscripts, and writings by other people, sorted alphabetically. There follows four boxes of small books, booklets, pamphlets and monographs in the order used by Kilman, and the proceedings of the Philosophical Society of Texas from 1946 to 1969. Finally there is a scrapbook, a booklet on Texas, a copy letter book, and a box of 113 photographs.
