Biographical Note

Sydney Van Ulm - cartoonist, photographer, reviewer, and reporter - served on the Houston Press for almost fifty years after leaving the Boston Record in the 1920's. The Van Ulm Collection consists of scrapbooks, clippings, and original sketches by Mr. Van Ulm. Sports figures and prominent personalities, both local and national, are represented in the drawings. The scrapbooks include Mr. Van Ulm's sports and political cartoons.

This collection contains manuscripts and items from the life of Sydney Van Ulm.


The collection consists of 3 boxes and 2 loose scrapbooks. Box 1 consists of clippings, original sketches. Box 2 consists of loose scrapbooks and clippings that are in very delicate condition. Items 3 and 4 are scrapbooks. Box 5 consists of 58 loose original artist sketches.

The collection was donated to HMRC by Sidney Van Ulm on June 4, 1976.

Processing Information

Processed by Bruce Webber, completed on April 14, 1977.

A box of photographs was removed during processing and moved to the Houston Press Collection, RG D 005. The processor determined that these photos had originally been part of the Press's photo morgue, and had been removed by Van Ulm for research.
