Dorothy was the second child of the couple; her brothers were Oscar Jerome and Arthur Hill Hanszen. Her father, Oscar A Hanszen was a school teacher who taught shop at Bryan Street High School. He later joined his family's egg business, dealing with the poultry industry in East Texas, Arkansas and Northern Louisiana. Dorothy Hanszen graduated with a Bachelors degree from Texas Women's University and began teaching in Conroe, Texas. She married Emmon Bach in 1946, moving to Scarborough, New York. Widowed in 1952 when Emmon passed away, she returned home to Dallas, teaching in DISD from 1957-1970. After she retired, she became active in the Texas Democratic Party and ran for Congress. Dorothy later moved to Carthage, Texas and passed away on June 8th, 2003.
