Biographical Note

Cosette Faust Newton - born Mary Cosette Faust - was born in July 1889 in Kemp, Texas. She received her first Ph.D. (in Philology)from Radcliffe University in 1916. She then married Frank Newton in 1918 and went on to earn a dozen professional and academic degrees. She lectured all over the world, held various academic posts, authored about 15 books of poetry and music, and amassed quite a collection of antique and Asian artifacts. She lived with her husband at 4005 Miramar in Highland Park, where they had a mock yacht - the S.S. Miramar - built in their backyard. The Newton's were sued by the city to remove the yacht and their appeals were eventually turned down in the State Supreme Court of Texas some 20 years later. She died 12 April 1975 at the age of 86.
