Biographical Sketch

Powell “Punky” Shepherd was born December 1, 1939, in Leona Texas, to Grace Batson Shepherd and Roger Sterling Shepherd. He had one older brother, Roger David Shepherd. His mother died in 1973, his father in 1975, and his brother in 1976. Shepherd began studying music and dance at the age of eleven. He earned a BFA in Dance and Drama with secondary emphasis on playwriting and directing from the University of Texas at Austin in 1964. He studied under choreographer Shirlee Dodge while at the university.

Shepherd moved from Austin to West Berlin, where he studied dance with Mary Wigman, and composition and percussion with Ulrich Kessler, at the Wigman School. He received a German State Certificate in Choreography and Pedagogy in 1966. During his time in Berlin, Shepherd organized and produced two seasons of new works with his company, The Berlin Dance Ensemble, and performed in Wigman's two final choreographic works for West German television. He danced with the Bayreuth Wagner Festival under the direction of choreographer Birgit Culberg, and assisted Culberg in presenting a position paper on dance for television at a UNESCO conference in Salzburg, Austria.

From 1966 to 1967 Shepherd lived in London, where he performed with the Ernest Berk Dance Company, appeared as a dancer on BBC II television, and taught and performed at various British schools. He was guest artist and teacher at the Laban Institute in Surrey, and in 1967 collaborated with composer Gavin Byars in the production of the first contemporary Anglican mass.

In 1968, Shepherd completed his MFA at the University of Illinois at Urbana, where he studied dance with Willis Ward, Jan Stockman Symonds, Beverly Schmidt Blossom, and Marsha Palladin, and musical composition and performance with Ben Johnston, Lejaren Hiller, Herbert Brun, Salvatore Martirano, Bruno Nettl, and John Cage. From 1967 to 1968, he choreographed and performed numerous new works, including Hiller's "Avalanche," a large multi-media work presented at the Ravinia Festival in Chicago.

In New York from 1968 to 1971, Shepherd performed new plays, dances, dramas and musical comedies at La Mama Theatre and other Off-Off Broadway houses, appeared as a dancer on CBS television, and toured with his company, Kinetic Karma. He returned to Austin in 1971, and taught Modern Dance and Dance Drama at the University of Texas until 1974. During these three years, he worked on some twenty-five plays as choreographer or movement specialist, and choreographed new dance concerts, operas and other special events.

From 1975 to 1986, Shepherd free-lanced as a dancer, teacher, choreographer, musician, director, playwright, and artist, traveling across the United States and back to Europe. From 1977 to 1978, he maintained his own studio in New York, performed two solo concerts, and directed a Christmas show at La Mama. In 1979, he presented a series of lecture demonstrations at Laguna Gloria Art Museum in Austin. In 1980, he appeared with Letitia Eldridge at the Festival of Autumn in Paris, and in 1984 premiered a group work with original music at the first International Arts Festival of San Antonio. In Berlin from 1985 to 1986, he was a guest artist in honor of Mary Wigman's 100th birthday, presented a one man show entitled "The Art of Writing Dances" at Kunstraum Galerie, and appeared at the Berlin Dance Pantomime Festival.

He directed his play "Revival!" that was produced at Cuesta College, San Luis Obispo, California, in the spring of 1990. In the 1990s, Austin was his home base. He taught a master class in movement for the stage sponsored by the Austin Circle of Theaters in 1992. He continued teaching dance and playwriting at Laguna Gloria. He performed at Cafezino in 1995. After 1995, he did not do much dancing, but he continued writing poetry, short stories, plays, and painting.

On November 1, 1998, a "Party for Punky!" was held at Antone’s in Austin to help defray the costs of his medical expenses. Austin musicians and dancers entertained the audience and celebrated his life. He died March 4, 1999, of cancer at his home in Austin. He was cremated and a memorial service was held at the Laguna Gloria Hillside Amphitheater.

Scope and Contents

This collection is comprised of two separate accessions that were combined to form the Powell Shepherd Papers (AR.Z.027) in 2013. Boxes 1-15 were donated in 1999 by the executor of the estate of Powell Shepherd after his passing. Boxes 16-29 were donated by Shepherd himself in the mid-1980s. Photographs #001-830 (boxes 30-31) were also donated by Shepherd, as well as two family photo albums. His estate donated more photographs, which are designated by the AR.1991.014 accession number: (AR.1991.014 #001-1000) and found in boxes 32-34. The main three series document Shepherd’s personal life, professional life, and education.

The Personal series contains his biographical information and a small amount of family materials, including legal and financial documents relating to land owned in East Texas. There are also memorial tributes to his close friends and artistic colleagues Dwane Brown, Joe Ed Manry, and Fred Weyrich. Weyrich, who died of AIDS in 1991, was honored in an exhibit titled "Fred Weyrich: In Memoriam" at Laguna Gloria. Correspondence makes up the bulk of the personal materials. Because many of his friends were also his professional peers, the line between personal and professional within the correspondence is at some points blurred. Part of the correspondence is arranged by correspondent and date, while the other part is grouped alphabetically by sender for each decade of the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. The postcards of the 1940s and 1950s were received by members of the Shepherd family, and Roger Shepherd received a letter from Governor Price Daniel dated 1958. Also of interest in the personal materials are Shepherd’s diaries he kept throughout his life which date from 1979-1999. The diaries contain drawings, ideas for dance, ideas for writing, and daily observations. The photographs are largely from his estate’s donation and document family, friends, and his hometown of Leona, Texas. The family photo albums date from around the 1920s to 1940s and document his parents’ lives and his early life. 19th-century cabinet cards and tintypes of family members are also part of the collection. Scrapbooks document Shepherd’s upbringing in the early 1940s. Candid photos capture various family, friends, and travel scenes, as well as Austin related happenings, including an event at Antone’s (AR.1991.014 #408-419).

The Professional materials date from the 1950s to 1990s and largely contain Shepherd’s creative works, which are arranged by the following: music, novelettes, plays, poems, scripts, short stories, performances, and production notes. Performances make up the bulk of the creative works. Of particular note for the extent of their documentation are “The Magical Mystery of Dr. John Faustus” and “Da Nutcracker in da Bronx”. The production notes, although fragmented and difficult to assign to specific productions, give insight into Shepherd's creative process and working methods. A good amount of prints and negatives document his performances, as well as contain headshots, dance portraits, and artwork. The printed material consists of theater and dance programs, clippings, and posters largely dating from the 1960s-1980s.

The Education series dates from 1947 to 1995 and documents Shepherd’s work as a student and teacher, as well as his colleagues’ and students’ creative works. His courses at the University of Texas at Austin and Laguna Gloria Art Museum are documented, as well as his overseas activities as an instructor. Material is included on mentor Mary Wigman and fellow dancer Kay Braden. Creative works include plays by Dennis Paddie, Nick Andrews, M. Richard Myers III, and writings by his friend Francis Sage.
