Scope and Contents

This collection is comprised of photographic materials taken by Richard Denney and his cousin, Marvelene West. 94 color slides, taken from 1954-1971 by West, document landmarks in Austin such as Northwest Pool, Mueller Municipal Airport, Zilker Park, Barton Springs, Seton Hospital, and the University of Texas campus, including the construction of Darrell K Royal Memorial Stadium. Also included in the slides are images of flooding in Austin in the 1950s. Twenty-one of the color slides (#074-094) were digitized by the donor and donated as digital images (.jpg). Twelve photographs taken by Denney (#095-106), digitized by the donor and donated as digital images (.jpg), capture the DEC-10 timesharing computer system and the staff of the Computation Center at the University of Texas on the night the DEC-10 was shut down in 1982. An article titled "The Soul of an Old Machine" by Clive B. Dawson (.pdf), written in 1984, is also included and likewise documents the final night of the DEC-10 at the University of Texas. The DEC-10 was, at the time, a cutting edge computer system and the precursor to much of our modern technology. It was one of the systems on which the Internet was developed and was used for early artificial intelligence research.
