An Inventory of the Collection
The City of Austin Mayor's Court, along with the District Court, County Court, Justice's Court were responsible for adjudicating court cases in Travis County, Texas. The Mayor's Court concerned itself with arrests made by the Austin Police Department for misdemeanor crimes such as vagrancy, disturbing the peace, fast riding, public intoxication, and rudely displaying a pistol and assessed fines to defendants found guilty. These types of cases are currently heard by the City of Austin Municipal Court.
The collection contains two Mayor's Court dockets containing cases #1709 to 1992 dated April through July 1874, and cases No. #9896 to 115411 dated January through July 1881. Includes defendant's name, how they pleaded, amount of fine paid or if "committed" until fine could be paid if they were unable to pay the fine immediately.
