Biographical Sketch

After graduating from Ohio University with degrees in International Studies and Spanish, Cassie Smith (1980-), daughter of Roderick and Sherry Smith of Cutler, Ohio, came to Austin, Texas, to attend graduate school at the University of Texas. While here, she became immersed in Mexican American culture and the local arts scene. As a student at the University of Texas, she centered her research on art education within the context of the Chicano community, graduating with her Master of Arts degree in Latin American Studies and Art Education in 2014. Her involvement with this community and her thesis research inspired her work with the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center (ESB-MACC). After volunteering in various capacities, she eventually served on its advisory board until her graduation. As of 2018, Cassie Smith continues her research regarding art education in the borderlands as a doctoral student in the Department of Anthropology at the University of New Mexico.
