Detailed Description of the Collection
Comanche Baptist Church Ledger
An Inventory of the Collection
Little could be found about Comanche Baptist Church, however there are two cemeteries named Comanche Cemetery located on Caldwell Lane in Garfield, Texas, in Travis County. Family names which are represented in the ledger match some of the burial records, including Fowler, Crayton, Houston, and Pearson. The church was likely an African American church, as are the cemeteries.
The ledger dates from 1910 to 1918 and contains documentation of financial contributions to the church, the pastor's salary, and minutes of church meetings, which give an overview of what hymns were played, what Bible verses discussed, and the various needs of church members. The family names represented in the ledger include: Crayton, Fowler, Houston, Patterson, Pearson, and Shaw. On several occasions the church met with a Pastor C.H. Jones.
The ledger is in poor condition, including some mold damage.
