Administrative History

The Austin Bible Society, a branch of the American Bible Society, was organized in 1851 in Austin, Texas, to promote the circulation of the "Holy Scriptures." The organization was interdenominational and focused on the sale and distribution of Bibles in a variety of languages through a Bible Depository to promote daily reading of the Bible, visitations in home and teaching Bible classes.

Scope and Contents

The Austin Bible Society collection contains a minute book entitled "Record of Austin Bible Society Anniversary and Business Meetings, Commencing Nov. 22, 1868" and a typescript copy of the minute book. The minute book spans the years 1868 through 1903 and contains a portion of the Constitution of the Bible Society (part of the page has broken away), minutes of meetings, results of annual elections, treasurer and depository reports. Beginning in 1895 a more formal Auxiliary Bible Society's Annual Report, presumably to be submitted to the national organization, are included which provide the Treasury and Depository reports as well as a General Operation and Annual Meeting section. The General Operation section includes questions such as "number of Protestant Churches co-operating with this Auxiliary," "Number of Protestant Churches on its field not co-operating", "number of families visited during the year," "number families found destitute of the Scriptures" and "Number of destitute families supplied with the Scriptures."
