Administrative History

Austin Art League Group I was organized in 1909 by Nellie Faulkner Baker, Margaret Burroughs and Ann Garrison. The purpose of the organization as stated in their constitution was “the study of art, and the cultivation of and appreciation of art among its members and the community at large.” The group held monthly meetings and programs on a variety of art topics, as well as organized and sponsored art exhibitions for the public.

In the early 1920s, Group II of the Art League was established, and by the 1950s, there were nine local groups which maintained interaction with one another through an annual meeting, a joint advisory board, and joint projects. Group III was organized on October 28, 1925, and the first meeting of Group V was held October 15, 1927. According to meeting minutes, Group V adopted the same constitution and by-laws of Group III at their first regular meeting.

Each group elected a president, vice-president, and secretary-treasurer. Various standing committees, including a membership committee, exhibition committee, social committee and program committee, were also elected within each group. There were two classes of membership: active and associate.

The Art League was an institutional member of the Austin Women’s Club, the Texas Fine Arts Association, and the American Federation of Arts. In 1972, the group received a non-profit status.

Scope and Contents

The Austin Art League records are organized into three series by group number. 0.8 linear feet (2 boxes) of Group I records date from 1914 to 2010 and contain correspondence, notes, members’ biographical data, yearbooks, clippings, and meeting minutes. There are also descriptions and notes concerning the paintings collected by Group I that were on loan to Austin Pubic Library for several years.
