Lucy Baumgardner Photograph Album
An Inventory of the Collection
Lucile "Lucy" S. Baumgardner (1925-2016) was an Austin resident as a child and attended Pease Elementary, University Junior High and Austin High schools as well as the University of Texas at Austin. She was married to Joseph Baumgardner. They lived in Houston for a time and returned to Austin in 1983. It is unknown how she came to possess the album. The actual creator of the album is unknown.
A photograph album dating from 1919-1920 with 99 black-and-white snapshots documents the Austin High School football team of 1920 as well as other local young men and women at leisure. At the beginning of the album are fifteen portraits of players on the Austin High School football team: "Jolly" Roberdeau, "Toofy" Maud, "Little Albert" Prater, "Swede" Falk, "Heavy" Martin, "Mickey" Hart, "Shorty" Cox, "Flatfoot" Rowley, "Hickey" Schwarzer, "Slippery" Dilworth, "Dutch" Quintus, "Shine" Williams, "Yance" Clements, and "Hefty" Lightfoot. The remainder of the album consists of snapshots of young men and women in various activities. Pictured are: groups of friends on excursions; informal portraits of various young men; various swimming scenes on lakes or rivers, and possibly at Barton Springs, and at rapids on the Comal River at New Braunfels. One young woman in particular is pictured throughout but is unidentified. There are a couple of photos of snow scenes, one image of the Elk's Hall in Fort Worth, and a few landscape views. Some people are identified but primarily only with first names. A few photographs appear to be missing; some photos have come loose from the album pages and a few are out of place.
