Biographical Sketch

Mary Harriet Graham (1917-1992) was a member of the Graham family of Austin, Texas. Her great-grandfather was Beriah Graham (1804-1879), the first Superintendent of the Austin State Hospital (then called the Austin Lunatic Asylum). Through this wing of the family she was related to Austinite R. Niles Graham and (through marriage) to the Pease family.

Her grandfather, James Walter Graham (1855-1932), was a well-known druggist for many years in Austin, and served on the Board of Regents of the University of Texas at Austin, the Austin School Board, and the City Council. He and his wife, Harriett Tarr Murray (1854-1932), had four children: W. Murray Graham (1879-1957), Mary Harriet’s father, a real estate developer who developed the Enfield and Bryker Woods areas of Austin; Belmont Graham King (1876-1966), who wrote poetry and music and whose work is represented in the papers; George Malcolm Graham (1886-1937), a pathologist and bacteriologist who worked for the State Department of Health and in his own private practice; and Lilly Grace Graham (1882-1908).

Mary Harriet, stricken with polio at age 26, was the only daughter of W. Murray Graham and his wife Helen Hood Graham (1886-1978). Belmont Graham married Florian B. King and their only daughter, Grace Graham King (1911-1994), married a pharmacist named Alfred Rodriguez. George Malcolm Graham married Sylvia Marie Tellier (1888-1978). Lilly Grace Graham married James Brodie (1876-1938) of Scotland; their daughter Belmont Graham Brodie (1905-1983) married Austinite Roswell Miller (1903-1980).

Scope and Contents

This collection contains materials documenting Mary Harriet Graham’s family of Austin, Texas, from 1845 to 1963. The first series chronicles Beriah Graham, Mary Harriet’s great-grandfather, and his immediate family and dates from 1845 to 1870. Notable in this material is a slave’s bill of sale to Thomas Graham from 1852.

The James Walter Graham Family series documents Mary Harriet’s grandfather and his immediate family. This series contains items dating from 1876 to 1930 and includes invitations, correspondence, and a family history written by his wife, Harriet Tarr Murray Graham. The Murray Family series dating from 1846 to 1847 and 1863 to 1908 documents Benjamin Franklin Murray’s family of New Bloomfield, Missouri, and includes a diary kept by Mr. Murray during his travels as a soldier in the Mexican-American War. The W. Murray Graham Family series contains primarily newspaper clippings dating from 1937 to 1955.

The largest series of material documents the immediate family of Belmont Graham King, Mary Harriet’s aunt, and includes poems and sheet music written by Mrs. King dating from 1941 to 1962. Other series document the immediate families of an uncle George Malcolm Graham and dates from 1890 to 1931, and a cousin Belmont Graham (Brodie) and her family which dates from 1899 to 1919 and 1939 to 1958, though the scope of these series is relatively limited. The last two series comprise the photographic materials dating from 1907 to 1935, notably three photo albums containing pictures of many of the family members listed above, and assorted items belonging to various Graham family members from 1890 and 1912.

The collection is arranged into nine series:

III. Murray Family
IV. W. Murray Graham Family
V. Belmont (Graham) King Family
