Biographical Note

John Tibaut Bowman was born in 1884 (circa) to Thornton Hardie Bowman and Mollie Tilbaut. He was one of six children. He married Gladys GreenLee in 1918 and had three children Robert, John Tibaut Jr., and William. Bowman worked for Oscar Branch Colquitt as his private secretary at the Texas Railroad Commission. Colquitt was elected Governor of Texas on January 17, 1911 and Bowman continued to work as his private secretary. He was temporarily appointed to the position of Secretary of State under Governor Colquitt after C.C. McDonald stepped down in 1912. Bowman served the position of Secretary of State for a year until John L. Wortham qualified for the position. After the year he returned to his position as private secretary. In 1924 Bowman was elected president of Austin Country Club where he helped to expand the club. Bowman died in 1937 at the age of 53.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains materials compiled by John T. Bowman’s during his one year career as Secretary of State under Governor Colquitt and his tenure as president of Austin Country Club. The collection consists of correspondence and telegrams from his positions as Secretary of State in 1912, as well as some personal correspondence from the same year. Also included are bylaws and house rules of the Austin Country Club and correspondence including notes from his position as president of Austin Country Club in 1924.
