Biographical Note

The generations of the Finch family of Austin, Texas were involved in many types of Austin business including hardware, leasing land, education, and law. The first Howell Mallory Finch was married to Mary Stanley Finch (-1941) and worked for Simmons Hardware Company. They had four sons: Howell M. Finch, Jr. (1878-1925), Frank Conner Finch (1880-1886), Stanley Phister Finch (1881-1972), and Herbert Hoxie Finch (1884-1953). Stanley Phister Finch and his father leased farm land southeast of San Antonio in the 1920s, calling themselves Finch and Finch. The business was run out of the first H. M. Finch's home at 3300 Duval Street in Austin. Stanley received his master's degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and became a professor of civil engineering at the University of Texas, later becoming chairman of the Department of Engineering from 1937-1943 before retiring in 1952. Stanley was married to Emily Rice Finch (1897-1994) and lived at 3312 Duval Street in Austin. They had two children: Emily Anne Finch (1929-2014) and Howell M. Finch. Emily Anne Finch graduated from the University of Texas in 1951 with a Bachelor of Arts in English. She then moved to Houston where she married Richard McKay in 1954 and they had four daughters. Howell M. Finch was a lawyer with Kendall, Randle, Finch, and Osborn and was married to Diane Finch. Stanley's Brother Herbert Hoxie Finch was married to Anne Townes Finch (1919-1992) and had three daughters. He was an officer at W. H. Richardson Company before founding the Gage and Finch Company in 1945 that was later renamed Austin Hardware Company.

Scope and Contents

The Finch Family Papers consists largely of correspondence from 1921 between Finch and Finch and the farmers they leased land to, as well as their tax receipts, and receipts of goods purchased for use on their leased land, giving insight into the daily operations of Texas farmers and their lessors in the 1920s. Also in the collection is the personal correspondence of Emily Anne Finch at age 15-16 while at Camp Waldemar of Hunt, TX in 1945 and 1946, and expense records of the H. M. Finch household in 1928. There are also specifications, architectural drawings, and research files gathered to submit an application for a historic status for the family home at 3312 Duval Street, Austin. The research files include copies of correspondence, leases, and other papers. In addition, there are photographs of Stanley P. Finch's engineering students and assorted portraits.
