Creator Note

This project was first conceived by Gloria Espitia, Mexican American Neighborhood Liaison at the Austin History Center, in 2008, in an effort to educate and promote the importance of preserving the untold stories and memories of local Mexican Americans. The collection and project celebrates the lives of Mexican Americans who have resided in Austin and Travis County and were the first to blaze a trail in the respective communities of the Arts, Business, Media, Education, Public Health, Humanities, Politics, Public Service and Sports.

Between 2008 and 2010, materials were collected through the auspices of the Austin History Center in conjunction with a 5 month exhibit at the AHC, a traveling exhibit by the same title, two exhibit receptions, and four programs held during the months of September 2010 to December 2011. The accompanying traveling exhibit was developed and produced by the Austin History Center/Austin Public Library with grant funding from Humanities Texas.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of Trailblazers nominee information for 60 individuals. These were submitted by the local public, family, and friends after a call for nominations was publicized by the Austin History Center's Mexican American Neighborhood Liaison. Included are project and grant proposals and summaries, selection committee information, media coverage, audiovisual materials, correspondence, nomination forms, photographs of many of the nominees, oral history interviews, and textual materials related to the nominees and project. The collection is arranged into two series: Project Files and Nominee Materials

The Project Files (2008-2011) series contains a project proposal and summary, master copy of a Trailblazers nomination form, materials related to the selection committee and selection criteria, a Humanities Texas grant proposal to develop the project, audiovisual materials relating to the exhibit reception and subsequent programs, The Austin American-Statesman, The Daily Texan, and ¡Ahora Sí! newspaper articles publicizing the project, and photographs of the exhibit and exhibit installation.

The Nominee Materials (2009, undated) series contains nomination forms for each of the 57 individuals nominated, textual materials outlining biographies and accomplishments of nominees, and photographs of nominees and their families. Included in Susana Almanza's nomination materials are video recordings documenting her life as an East Austin activist, her involvement with the Brown Berets, and her achievements with People Organized in Defense of Earth and her Resources (PODER). This series is arranged alphabetically by last name. The first thirty two individuals in Boxes 1-4 were awarded Trailblazer recognition, while the remaining twenty five in Box 5 received honorable mention.

Collection is arranged into 2 series:

II. Nominee Materials
